I think just about everybody has their personal favorite movies they love to watch every year around Christmastime. I know I sure do, but I also love finding new holiday movies to add to the list. If you find yourself looking for something new this Christmas, you might want to check out the book Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas by Alonso Duralde.
No matter what your taste is, this book is chock full of suggestions for you. It’s got selections for the kiddies, stuff for people who like hilariously bad movies, modern stuff, comedies, horror movies, just to name a few. It’s even got a pretty extensive section dedicated to of all the various incarnations of A Christmas Carol. The book includes a lot of the traditional Christmas classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, The Bishop’s Wife, Christmas in Connecticut, Holiday Affair, and White Christmas, but some of its suggestions struck me as quite interesting just because I don’t typically consider them Christmas movies. When I think of movies like The Apartment and Night of the Hunter, I don’t automatically think of Christmastime, but they both do have their Christmas scenes.
The book is divided into sections based on what type of move you’re looking for. And for each movie, there’s information about ratings, runtime, some of the cast, a brief synopsis and critique, and some trivia. So it’s really kind of like having IMDB right at hand. There’s also an appendix full of movies that feature Christmas scenes, but aren’t necessarily Christmas movies. There, you can find anything from The 400 Blows and Baby Face to Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Full Metal Jacket, and Mean Girls. Pretty much my only complaint about this book is that a few of the movies in the appendix are far more worthy of being included in the main part of the book than some of the ones actually in the main section. I absolutely adore Night of the Hunter, but The Man Who Came to Dinner is definitely more of a Christmas movie.
Disclosure: I won this book in a giveaway on Goodreads.com. They give away some pretty cool books on there, so if you’re an avid reader, you might want to keep an eye on those.
